About the parade
La Colmena started the tradition of commemorating Mexican Independence Day in 2019, honoring the country's fight for independence. The inaugural celebration of Mexican Independence was held in 2019 in front of their headquarters in Port Richmond. The following year in 2020, La Colmena hosted the first Mexican Independence Day Parade in Staten Island. The parade’s route took place on Port Richmond Avenue, home to many businesses and Mexican culture. This allowed local residents the opportunity to openly celebrate their origin and culture. Since 2020, thousands of locals from several Staten Island communities have gathered in Port Richmond to celebrate Mexican Independence Day by participating in La Colmena’s Annual Mexican Independence Day Parade.
