WHAT IS IT​

Forming part of the Day Laborer Workforce Initiative Coalition, La Colmena, along with partner organizations like the National Day Laborer Organizing Network (NDLON) and local CBO’s throughout New York City, is committed to organizing for progressive labor rights. Championing this initiative actively enhances workplace conditions in unregulated industries, combats wage theft, and defends workers' civil rights. Founding community members dedicated themselves to improving the reach and efficacy of day laborer worker centers. La Colmena’s Worker Centers serve as a safe environment for connecting with a diverse population such as day laborers, domestic workers, and other immigrant low-wage job seekers. These locations encourage individuals to learn and assert their rights, develop skills, and become active members of the community. La Colmena’s Day Laborer Workforce Initiative (DLWI) department focuses on connecting job seekers to employers and delivering programming that uplifts the community. The DLWI department plans, supports, and delivers multiple programs within La Colmena. Mission-focused services carried out by the organization promote dignified work, improve labor policy, and advance worker rights.
