Mayor's Office of Immigrant Affairs (MOIA)

WHAT IS IT​
Since 2022, La Colmena was chosen to be one of 18 immigrant serving organizations by the Mayor's Office of Immigrant Affairs (MOIA) to conduct (20) Immigrant Rights Workshops (IRW). The objective is to help currently residing and newly arrived immigrants by informing them about their legal basic rights through an informative presentation and participants are also provided with material pertaining to the information being presented.
WHAT WE DID
In FY24, our 20 IRWs throughout Staten Island drew 525 attendees. By the end of the fiscal year, these efforts translated into direct impact, generating 30 requests for legal services and 42 requests for social services.

NYC Benefits
Fair Fares, SNAP, Cash Assistance, Senior Fare Discounts, and Child Care Vouchers

WHAT IS IT​
Since 2023, NYC Benefits has been able to assist clients with their benefit applications by facilitating the application process. The program covers Fair Fares, SNAP, Cash Assistance, Senior Fare Discounts, and Child Care Vouchers. Assistance is available by appointments at both our locations. WHAT WE DID
Since the program has been at La Colmena, we have helped over 500 people with their benefit applications. This has greatly impacted our communities' access to benefits.

Nanny We Rise
We Rise Nanny Training Program

WHAT IS IT​
In partnership with Cornell University’s Worker Institute, the We Rise Nanny Training Program is a seven-day certificate course designed to enhance nanny skills and raise standards in the domestic work industry. This initiative empowers workers, promotes labor rights, and improves service quality, ultimately increasing employer valuation and societal recognition for this essential workforce.
WHAT WE DID
Since 2023, the We Rise Nanny Training initiative has completed three cycles, certifying 35 women. Through a comprehensive 21-hour Train-The-Trainer program, participants mastered essential skills to lead 3-hour community modules on topics like wage negotiation and medication administration. Reflecting their commitment to community growth, graduates earned a certificate and trainer recommendation letters from Cornell University.
RESULTS
In 2024, our programs trained 16 new trainers in the spring and 23 nanny training participants in the fall.

Essex Workforce Program
Essex Avenue Foundation

WHAT IS IT​
The Essex Workforce Program is an initiative in collaboration with the Essex Avenue Foundation, providing hands-on training to participants in the immigration process. Through this program, asylum seekers gain practical experience at a partner hotel, developing essential hospitality skills while receiving a stipend incentive. This initiative equips participants with valuable workforce training, helping them build a pathway toward stable employment and economic independence.
